VanHooser’s Big Day Powers Caldwell Past Dawson 17-7

Caldwell County senior Tate VanHooser had himself a day at the plate to help the Tigers advance to the 7th District baseball championship game.

VanHooser hit for the cycle, going 4-for-6 with a grand slam and driving in nine runs as Caldwell turned away Dawson Springs 17-7 in semifinal action Monday at Elmer Kelley Stadium in Madisonville.

The Tigers will play the host Madisonville-North Hopkins Maroons in the title tilt, which is now set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Madisonville City Park.

Caldwell trailed 2-0 through two innings against Dawson, but got the offense going in the third inning to tie the game, then scored in each of the final five innings to pull away.

Ben Goodaker was the winning pitcher for the Tigers, pitching into the fifth inning while allowing three earned runs on nine hits before getting relief help from VanHooser and Logan Smiley.

Carter Whittington went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs for the Tigers. Smiley and Deontaye Walls each went 3-for-5.

Ethan Jones, Landon Pace and Bryden Mann each went 2-for-4 for the Panthers while Bailey Heaton was 2-for-5.

The Tigers are now 12-12 and have won four of their last five outings. Dawson finishes the season at 5-16.

Caldwell next faces a Maroon team that is 11-14 on the season. Madisonville edged the Tigers 5-4 in nine innings in the only regular-season matchup.

Madisonville holds a 53-32 advantage all-time against the Tigers.
