Jackson Shoulders threw a four-hit shutout — and also had a two-run homer — as Lyon County won the 2nd Region baseball championship for the first time in school history Monday night.

The Lyons (28-7) scored five times in the top of the third inning and blanked Henderson County 6-0 in the regional finale at University Heights Academy in Hopkinsville.

It’s the first regional championship for a 5th District school since Livingston Central claimed the title in 1994. Caldwell County in 1991 is the only other 5th District team to win the regional baseball championship since 1976.

Lyon’s pitching depth was on display over the three-day event, with the Lyons allowing only five runs in three games.

Shoulders (3-0) struck out four and walked two while needing just 79 pitches to blank the Colonels.

Meanwhile, Lyon got all the offense it would need in the top of the third inning. A one-out double by Aidan Rush got the scoring started. Rush was then able to trot home when Brody Williams hammered a deep drive to left field for a two-run home run. That made it 3-0.

After Travis Yancy reached on an error, Shoulders followed with another no-doubt homer to left, extending the margin to 5-0 and putting the Lyons firmly in control of the contest.

The Lyons tacked on one more run in the fifth. Gunnar Bingham doubled with one out, then came around to score on a single to right by Christian O’Daniel.

Long was 2-for-2 at the plate while Bingham doubled twice and was 2-for-3. Rush went 2-for-5.

For Henderson (22-15), Andrew Mills was 2-for-3.

Next up for Lyon is semi-state action on Saturday afternoon at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. The Lyons will take on 3rd Region champion Owensboro Catholic (32-5) in that matchup. The Aces beat Ohio County 11-4 Monday night in the 3rd Region finale.
