Mineral Mound Golf Course in Eddyville will be dedicated to honor the late high school state golf champion Cullan Brown.

The Kentucky Tourism, Arts, and Heritage Cabinet along with Governor Andy Beshear officially announced the honor Wednesday. The course will be named The Cullan at Mineral Mound State Park.

“Kentucky lost an incredible individual who touched the lives of everyone he met both on and off the course,” said Gov. Beshear. “Cullan’s legacy and story of resilience will live on forever at Mineral Mound golf course in Eddyville where he grew up playing the game he loved as a child.”

Brown grew up playing golf on the 18-hole course at Mineral Mound Golf Course that opened in 2003.  Brown was the only individual state champion in the history of Lyon County High School athletics.  He won the 2016 state golf title on his way to winning the state’s player of the year award.  Brown was also the state runner-up in both 2015 and 2017.

His outgoing personality and engaging story-telling ability made him a favorite in both golfing circles and the Lyon County community.

After high school, Cullan attended the University of Kentucky where he was named to the All-SEC Freshman Team and notched four top-20 finishes.  Brown was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2019 — a rare form of bone cancer.  He passed away in August of last year.

“Cullan was a true example of a leader for both his family, team, and community,” said Kentucky State Parks Commissioner Russ Meyer. “As a longtime patron of the park, his story will continue to live on for future generations to learn from his strength and continued perseverance.”

Mineral Mound State Park is located on the shoreline of Lake Barkley and was once the farm of Willis B. Machen, the grandfather of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald – the wife of noted American author F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The official renaming ceremony will take place in late August.
