The Hopkinsville Tigers won the second annual Best of the West 7-on-7 football tournament hosted by the Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation Department over the weekend.

Hoptown defeated Macon County, Ten. 41-21 in the championship game Saturday afternoon.  Both offenses and defenses are awarded points using an intricate scale that rewards defensive stops and takeaways as well as offensive touchdowns.

Hoptown’s lone blemish came Friday with a loss to Bullitt East in pool play, but the Tigers were still able to secure the No. 1 seed for Saturday’s tournament.

The Tigers beat No. 16 seed Butler County 40-3 and No. 8 seed Kenwood 45-16 to move into the semifinals where they knocked off No. 13 seed Bowling Green 32-19.

Macon County, a Class 4A team from Lafayette, Tenn., was 7-3 last year. As the No. 3 seed, they beat No. 6 seed Paducah Tilghman 42-26 in Saturday’s opener.  In the semifinals, they edged No. 2 seed Russellville 26-24.

The Panthers beat Christian County 40-14 and Clinton, Tenn. 32-2 in their first two games Saturday before the loss to Macon County.

After opening with the loss to Russellville as the No. 10 seed, Christian County bounced back with a trip to the consolation finals.  The Colonels beat Clarksville 23-20 and Logan County 24-17.  Christian County’s third straight win was a 23-13 victory over Union County before a 27-20 loss to Bullitt East in the consolation championship.

Trigg County picked up a pair of wins Friday to gain the No. 8 seed in Saturday’s tournament. The Wildcats lost to Kenwood 31-11 to move to the consolation bracket.  Trigg beat Butler County 39-16 before losing to eventual consolation bracket champion Bullitt East 33-31 in the semifinals.

Bullitt East, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, lost its opener to Bowling Green 35-23.

Pearl-Cohn, the tournament’s defending champion, was slated to return in 2021 but opted to play in a tournament closer to Nashville.
