Madisonville Wins, Lyon County Falls at Legion State Tourney

Madisonville Post 6 picked up a win while Lyon County Post 68 suffered a setback in opening-day action at the State American Legion Baseball Tournament Thursday at Graves County.

In the first game of the tourney Thursday afternoon, Lyon County was limited to just three base hits in a 12-0 setback to Oldham County Post 39.

Oldham put together five-run frames in each of the second and fourth innings to grab the upper hand.

Oldham advanced to face Madisonville, which had drawn a bye in the opening round.

Madisonville scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie and went on to defeat Oldham 6-4 in Thursday’s late game.

Layton Stallons was the winning pitcher for Post 6 while Ben Goodaker got the final two outs in the seventh inning to pick up a save.

Dylan Sowders went 2-for-3 with a double while knocking in three runs for Madisonville. Aidan Rush was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs.

In the other game on Thursday, Owensboro Post 9 blanked Mayfield Post 26 by a 7-0 score.

The double-elimination event continues with three more games on Friday.

Lyon County and Mayfield will meet in a loser’s bracket contest at 3 p.m.

In the winner’s bracket at 5:30, Owensboro and Madisonville will square off.

The final game of the day at 8 p.m. will have the Lyon-Mayfield winner taking on Oldham County in the loser’s bracket.

Two games will be played on Saturday, with a loser’s bracket contest at 5 p.m. followed by the championship game at 7:30.

A second championship game, if necessary, would be played Sunday at 1 p.m.
