Chris Rodriguez Jr. isn’t the only running back to keep an eye on in Kentucky’s backfield this season

It’s easy to forget that Kentucky does have other talented running backs because Chris Rodriguez was so good last year when he led the SEC in yards per attempt (6.6). He has lost yardage on only five of his 192 career rushing attempts, including 105 straight runs without a loss in 2020.

But it is sounding like sophomore running back Jutahn McClain could also play a big role in the offense due to his receiving skills. New offensive coordinator Liam Coen wants to be able to throw to the running backs and McClain apparently has convinced coaches he can catch the ball.

“I just absolutely love the kid,” Coen said. “He’s the type of kid that wants to do everything right.”

Head coach Mark Stoops started noticing that in spring practice.

“As I mentioned throughout the spring and the first five (preseason practices) generally is very good with catching the football and making some plays out of the backfield,” Stoops said about McClain.

“He does a lot of things well, to be honest with you. He’s a pretty complete player. He’s doing a good job.”

Coen loves the versatility that McClain provides along with his solid football IQ.

McClain worked on his leg strength during the offseason and added some weight to give him more power.

“My confidence is going up,” McClain said. “I’m learning how to read defenses because the game is slowing down for me. You want to be the best player on the field at all times and that is what I am working to do.”
