The Fort Campbell volleyball team put the brakes on a five-game slide with its first victory of the season, topping Trigg County 3-1 on Thursday night in Cadiz.

Early on it looked like the Lady Wildcats would be the ones stopping their six-game losing streak as they took the opening set 25-13.

However, it was all Lady Falcons for the remainder of the match, beginning with a 25-12 win in the second set.  They rolled to a 25-6 victory in the third to go up 2-1 and finished things off with a 25-18 result in the finale.

“We lost our focus in the second set and put ourselves in a hole, and then further added to it during the third set where there were complete breakdowns of what we needed to do from the service line as well as our defensive strategy for both service receive and covering Fort Campbell’s attack.  We were sub-par in our movements on the court and lacked communication at times,” Trigg County Coach Stephen Erdmann said.

Megan Hicks had four aces, and Rossie Baker added three as Trigg had a solid 85-percent serve rate for the match.

“We had some improvement on the court, but we’re still struggling to play emotionally level while maintaining consistency and with that chip on our shoulder.   We scuttled a bit early in the first set and then put together a few nice runs to build some separation.  Rossie closed it out with a very good service run.”

Fort Campbell had 21 aces in the match led by Marlie Fanning’s 11.  Maddie Thompson added six. Diamond Jenkins had seven kills for the Lady Falcons, and Anika Weisbrich added seven digs.

The Lady Wildcats will host the 2A Section 1 tournament on Saturday after receiving a buy into the semifinals.

Fort Campbell will hit the road on Monday for a matchup with Madisonville-North Hopkins.
