Lyon County’s girls extended their winning streak to nine matches but Caldwell County made them work for it Thursday night at Butler Stadium in Princeton.

The Lady Tigers had the better scoring opportunities in the contest, but the Lady Lyons cashed in one more of theirs in a 2-1 victory.

Lyon improved to 11-1-1 with the triumph.

Caldwell (4-8) got an early goal from Reagan Hodge to lead its former district rival 1-0. Hodge followed a rebound after Kendall Boyd’s shot spun off the hands of goalkeeper Maddie Russell. That came in the 8th minute.

Lyon tied things in the 35th minute when Anna White ran onto a ball just outside the box. She angled to the left, then sent a shot back across that found the right side of the net to knot the score at 1-1.

The game-winning goal came in the 58th minute when Lyon’s all-time leading scorer Rose Smith took a pass from younger sister Alice and scored on a long shot from near the right sideline to push the Lady Lyons in front 2-1. Smith’s high-arching shot when off the hands of Caldwell keeper Rachel McClung and found its way into the net.

Caldwell finished the night with a 15-10 advantage in shots but suffered its second loss to Lyon this season. The Lady Tigers fell in Eddyville 6-1.

Lyon’s Russell and Caldwell’s McClung each had six saves.

The Lady Lyons play again on Friday when they host Hopkinsville.

Caldwell will be in action at home again Tuesday against Paducah Tilghman.
