The season was beyond “on the brink” for the University Heights Academy Lady Blazers Tuesday night. UHA had trailed Christian County 1-0 since the 9:00 mark of their district semifinal match. The clock had reached 0:00 in the second half and had been there for at least a minute. The Lady Blazers’ chance of keeping their district championship streak alive was in deep trouble.

Then the Lady Blazers elected to “pay the Piper” or maybe it was more like let the Piper make the plays, as Piper Hancock scored two goals, one to force overtime, and the other to end the match, as UHA rallied for a heartstopping 2-1 win in sloppy conditions at the Stadium of Champions.

The “Piper’s” magic started when off a corner kick in the waning seconds in regulation, Piper Hancock took the ball in a traffic jam in front of the net and somehow got the ball to sneak into the goal to tie the game at 1-1 and force sudden-death overtime.

In the second 5-minute sudden-death overtime period, Hancock took a shot off a drop that found the left side of the net and sent the Lady Blazers and their fans into a frenzy of celebration, while at the same time breaking the hearts of the Christian County Lady Colonels. The drop was created when the ball struck the center official just outside the box. When the ball was dropped back into play, Hancock quickly stepped up the ball and drilled the match-winning shot.

You had to feel for the Christian County Lady Colonels. They had taken the lead at the 9:00 mark when Lillian Larkins took the ball in traffic right in front of the net and got it just across the goal line to give the Lady Colonels the early 1-0 lead. From their, Christian County’s defense was the story of the match as they turned back attack after attack from the Lady Blazer offense. Goalie Emma Camp was outstanding in protecting the net and nearly led the Lady Colonels to a big-time upset win.

UHA’s defense after the early goal was outstanding as well. The Lady Blazers especially did a big job on keeping an eye on Lady Colonels’ speedster Autumn Bell, not allowing her to become a big factor down the stretch of the match.

The Lady Colonels see their season come to an end with a record of 4-9-2.

UHA improves to 7-5-1 and moves on to the district championship game Thursday evening at the Stadium where they will face the Hopkinsville Lady Tigers. Hoptown easily rolled past Fort Campbell 6-0 in Tuesday night’s first semifinal match.

The Lady Tigers won the regular-season matchup with the Lady Blazers 3-2.
