Lyon County seniors Leah Schroeder and Rose Smith are a formidable one-two punch, both on and off the field.

Besides leading the Lady Lyon soccer team to a 15-2-2 mark and a 5th District championship this season, Schroeder and Smith are also leaders in the classroom.

Both were Governor’s Scholars Program recipients this summer.

The Governor’s Scholars Program is a summer residential program for outstanding high school students in Kentucky who are rising seniors. The Program originated in 1983 as a result of Kentucky leaders’ concern that the state’s “best and brightest” were leaving the Commonwealth to pursue educational and career opportunities elsewhere without fully understanding the potential of their talents at home.

Schroeder and Smith have both been involved with numerous clubs throughout their time in high school.

Schroeder is Lyon’ s Future Business Leaders of America president and Technology Student Association president this year and is also TSA state reporter.

As a sophomore, Schroeder’s team qualified for both the FBLA and TSA state competitions.

Meanwhile, Smith was nominated for the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientist Award of Excellence as a sophomore and was asked to represent Lyon County High School and the Commonwealth of Kentucky at the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington, D.C.

As a junior, she was nominated to represent Lyon at the National Student Leadership Conference.

Both have numerous other accomplishments both in sports and in the classroom.

Schroeder and Smith are 4.0 students.

On the soccer field this season, Smith has 40 goals and 17 assists while Schroeder has 30 goals and 11 assists.

Smith broke the school record for career goals earlier this year. She is also a member of the Lady Lyon basketball squad.

Schroeder and Smith will be in action again Tuesday night when the Lady Lyons take on Hopkins County Central in the first round of the 2nd Region tournament in Madisonville.
