The Logan County Lady Cougars picked up another 13th District volleyball championship Tuesday night, but to refer back to an old TV commercial, they got it the old-fashioned way, they had to earn it, as the Todd County Central Lady Rebels gave the Lady Cougars all they wanted, and then some. After dropping the third set, Logan County finished the fourth set on a 9-1 run to claim a 25-18 win and take a three set to one win over the Lady Rebels in Elkton.

While not quite the historic night the Lady Rebels were looking for, they did make a bit of 13th District history Tuesday. With their 25-19 win in the third set, Todd County Central handed Logan County its first-ever set loss district tournament play under the current configuration, which began in 2010.

The championship match between the two was a battle from the moment the whistle was blown to start play. In the opening set, the score was tied eleven times, the last one coming at 22-22. Logan County then scored three straight points to pull out the set 25-22 and go up one set to none in the match.

Logan County freshman Aubrey Sears was more than a handful for the Lady Rebels. Sears finished the opening set with seven kills. Her teammate Katie Baer added five kills of her own. Todd Central’s Lucy Chester had three kills and an ace. Lynnlee Jones added three kills for Todd Central.

The second set was much like the first. This set would be tied thirteen times, the final one coming at 19-19. Again, led by Aubrey Sears and Katie Baer, the Lady Cougars would finish the set strong, outscoring the Lady Rebels 6-4 to take a 25-23 win and go up two sets to none. Sears would finish this set with nine kills. Baer added six of her own. The Lady Rebels’ Lucy Chester had a huge set with nine kills and one ace.

With their backs against the wall, the Lady Rebels came out fighting early in the third set. Holding a slim 6-5 lead in the set, Todd Central went on a 6-1 run to take a 12-6 lead and control of the set. Behind the play of Lucy Chester, Meredith Drummond, and Emily Oden, the lead would grow to 17-9. Logan County could get no closer than five points for the rest of the set, as Todd Central would go on to win the third 25-19 to cut the Logan lead to two sets to one.

It was another big set for Lucy Chester, as she finished with five kills and two aces.

The fourth set looked as if it would play out just like the first two. The set was tied ten times, the last tie coming at 16-16. After the second of two aces from Lucy Chester, the Lady Rebels had a 17-16 lead. It was then Logan County did what a champion does, reaching down and finding one final run to put the match away. The Lady Cougars would score eight straight points to take a 24-16 lead and then go on to finish out the match with a 25-17 win.

After a quiet third set, Logan County’s Aubrey Sears came back big time in the fourth set, finishing with five kills. Lucy Chester had another big set for the Lady Rebels, as they came up just short of an historic win for the program.

For the night, Lucy Chester had 19 kills and 8 aces to lead Todd County Central. Lynnlee Jones finished the night with five kills. Addileigh Wofford had 24 assists, one kill, and one service ace. Wofford, Chester, and Meredith Drummond were all named to the All 13th District Team.

The loss drops Todd County Central to 22-13 for the year. Logan County improves to 24-13. Both teams will advance to the 4th Region tournament which will be played at Russellville High School.
