Cavanaugh, Wildcats Finish 8th at State Cross Country Meet

Austin Cavanaugh brought home a top-10 finish at the Class 2A State Cross Country Meet Friday. It’s the third straight top-10 finish for the Trigg County junior.

Cavanaugh ran the 3.1-mile course in a time of 16:49 which was good for an eighth-place finish. He finished in sixth place last year and 10th as a freshman.  Eric Ezell finished in the top 10 at state in consecutive years in 1985-86. Cavanaugh is the first to finish in the top 10 in three straight years since Trigg County made the move to Class 2A.

Timmy Cannon scored a 30th place finish in a time of 17:51. Marshall Jenkins came in 77th place in 18:43, and Riley Thompson was 85th in 18:50.

River Oliver came in 99th place with a time of 19:03 to round out Trigg’s scoring.  Seventh-grader Travis Cavanaugh came in 135th place in 19:34, and Jack Lingenfelter was 150th in 20:02.

Bell County’s Caden Miracle won the race in a time of 16:04.

As a team, Trigg County finished in eighth place for the second straight year. The Wildcats totaled 272 points, 14 points behind Bell County for seventh place.

For the second straight year, the state meet was run at the Bourbon County Park after decades at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Runners had to traverse wet and muddy conditions that were the result of light rain that fell throughout the day.
