There’s something about the Perdue Field turf that Caldwell County running backs like.

Two years ago, DeEric Hollowell ran for 292 yards and four touchdowns as the Tigers eked out a 56-54 victory at Trigg County.

Friday night, Logan Smiley rushed for 203 yards and had four total TDs as the Tigers pulled away for a 43-6 triumph on a wet night in Cadiz.

It was Caldwell’s ninth-straight win over Trigg as the Tigers keep possession of the 139 Bowl trophy for another year.

Smiley ran for 140 yards in the second half after Caldwell had gone to the locker room with a 28-6 advantage.

Caldwell finishes up a 7-3 regular season slate. However, the win was not enough to bump the Tigers past Murray in the KHSAA RPI. That means Caldwell will travel to Murray in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs next week.

Trigg ends the regular season 5-6 and will visit Paducah Tilghman in the first round of the 3A playoffs.

Caldwell put up a couple of first-quarter touchdowns on Friday and never trailed.

Jack Stevens scored on a 1-yard run at the 4:28 mark, then Stevens hit Max Kramer with a screen pass that turned into a 31-yard touchdown play 60 seconds later. Blake Vivrette kicked the extra points as the Tigers went up 14-0.

Trigg got to within 14-6 when quarterback Jacob Wease scored on a 3-yard run at the 10:36 mark of the second period. But a two-point pass was incomplete.

The Wildcats were able to move the ball at times, but could never find the end zone again.

Meanwhile, Caldwell countered Wease’s touchdown with a 13-yard scoring run by Smiley with 9:38 left in the half.

Smiley scored on a 31-yard swing pass from Stevens with just 21 seconds left in the first half to make it 28-6 at the break.

Neither team scored in the third period although Caldwell threatened before turning the ball over on downs at the Trigg 4-yard line.

Trigg got deep into the red zone early in the fourth quarter, getting a first-and-goal at the Caldwell 5. Trigg faced third-and-goal at the 1, but was stopped for a 4-yard loss. An incomplete pass on fourth down ended the drive.

Caldwell countered with a 95-yard drive that took nine plays — all on the ground. Smiley got loose for a 51-yard scoring jaunt with 4:05 to play to make it 35-6.

The Tigers had the ball one more time. Smiley needed just one play to find the end zone, going 35 yards with 2:41 to go. A mishandled snap on the conversion try was scooped up by Vivrette, who outraced Trigg’s defenders to the right corner of the end zone for two points. That made it 43-6.

Stevens passed for 146 yards for Caldwell and two scores while also rushing for 73 yards and the early touchdown.

Kramer caught four passes for 53 yards and the TD while Smiley added three catches for 38 yards.

Caldwell totaled 420 yards in the contest while Trigg had 239.

Wease threw for 186 yards for the Wildcats. Dakota Lockard had four receptions for 43 yards and Jhaden Vaughn caught four passes for 38 yards.

But Caldwell held the Trigg rushing attack to just 53 yards.

Drew Davis had a big defensive game for the Tigers, recording 13 tackles with a sack. Jamus Carneyhan, Elijah Shaheen and Stevens each had nine tackles for the Tigers.
