Signing with Murray State University is becoming a family tradition.

Lyon County senior infielder and pitcher Gunnar Bingham signed to play baseball at Murray State on Wednesday in a ceremony in the district conference room at Lyon.

Gunnar’s sister, Sophie Bingham, signed with the Murray State softball team out of high school in 2018. She is now at Georgetown College.

Bingham was one of three Lyons to ink college baseball offers on Wednesday.

Lyon catcher Brody Williams signed with Kent State while first baseman and pitcher Jackson Shoulders signed with Kentucky Wesleyan College.

Bingham hit .359 with a team-high 16 stolen bases while helping the Lyons win the first 2nd Region baseball championship in school history.

Bingham added seven home runs and drove in 31 runs for the Lyons, who used a 10-game late-season winning streak to reach the semifinal round of the state tournament in Lexington before falling to eventual state champion Louisville Trinity.

On the mound last season, Bingham was 2-0 with a 1.40 earned run average. But he spent most of his time manning the shortstop position.

The Murray State baseball program went 33-25 this past spring and reached the championship game of the OVC Tournament before falling to Southeast Missouri.

But Bingham has lots of work left at Lyon before heading to Murray.

Bingham is an all-district basketball player for the Lyons, who have been picked as the top team in the 2nd Region by at least one publication.

And Lyon’s baseball team will also be among the regional favorites in the spring of 2022.
