While not as stylish as both coaches hope their teams will be later in the season, the scrimmage between Lyon County and Calloway County Friday night in Murray definitely had mid-season intensity. Travis Perry hit one of two free throws in the final seconds of the third overtime as the Lyons fought to a 67-66 win over the Lakers.

The Lyons survived a 3-point onslaught from the Lakers, who knocked down 15 three-point shots in the contest. After scoring the first eight points of the second quarter, it appeared as if Calloway County would roll through the scrimmage, taking a 24-12 lead.

However, the Lyons got settled in and battled their way back into the contest. Lyon County would outscore the Lakers 11-2 to close out the half cutting the lead to 26-23 and the battle was on from there.

Lyon would outscore Calloway County 17-14 in the third quarter to tie the game up 40-40.

The Lakers knocked down a three late in the 4th quarter to go up 50-48. Jack Reddick would score down in the paint in the final seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime.

In both the first and the second overtime, which were reduced to three minutes for the scrimmage, the Lyons held late three-point leads only to see the Lakers connect on big threes to force another overtime period. The shot at the end of the second overtime splashed through the net as the horn sounded.

The third overtime was cut back to two minutes. Calloway County took a 66-64 lead to begin the extra period. Jackson Shoulders scored to tie the game at 66-66. Travis Perry then came up with a steal and made one of two free throws for the winning point. Lyon County would then come up with another steal to avoid giving the Lakers a chance to win at the horn.

Jackson Shoulders led the Lyons with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Travis Perry, after being limited to two points in the opening half, finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Gunnar Bingham and Jack Reddick added 11 points each for the Lyons.

Lyon County had its struggles from the field, connecting on only 23-70 from the field, and 4 of 23 from behind the arc.

The Lyons will close out the exhibition portion of their schedule Saturday, November 27 when they travel to Martin County to take on Paintsville in the Zip Zone Classic.
