Hoptown’s Mercer Named ‘District Player of the Year’

Making plays on both sides of the ball and helping lead the Hopkinsville Tigers into the second round of the playoffs, Tiger junior Daisjaun Mercer has been recognized for his play during the 2021 season. The Kentucky Football Coaches Association announced their “District Player of the Year” and “District Coach of the Year” awards for all six classes across the state Friday, with Mercer being named the “Player of the Year” for Class 4A District 1.

Mercer played in all 12 games for the Tigers this season, as Hoptown finished the year at 7-5 overall and 3-1 in regular-season district play. The Tigers’ season ended with a heartbreaking loss to Logan County in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.

On offense, Mercer ran the ball 8 times for 108 yards and a touchdown. He was Hoptown’s leading receiver with 44 catches for 1127 yards and 13 touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, Mercer was 6th on the team in tackles with 51 total tackles, including five tackles for loss.

Mercer also had six interceptions for the Tigers, returning two of those for touchdowns.
