Goodpasture Edges Lyons At 2021 Hoopfest

DRAFFENVILLE — Ten minutes after Friday night’s gritty 64-59 loss to Goodpasture (TN) at Reed Conder Gymnasium and 2021 Marshall County Hoopfest, Lyon County’s Jackson Shoulders described things in a rather graphic, but apt, way.

“We almost cut our own throats tonight,” he said. “Just the little things caught up to us.”

In a game where the largest lead by either team was seven points, it indeed was the little things that were maddening for the Lyons (1-1). Shoulders finished with a double-double behind 14 points and 10 rebounds, but referenced two missed free throws and two missed 10-foot jumpers as post-game frustrations for him.

Lyon County’s star sophomore point guard Travis Perry scored 24 points and had five rebounds, three steals and zero turnovers — but finished 5-for-15 from the arc after a 1-for-7 first half, and was limited to 9-of-23 from the field.

He wasn’t the only Lyon County shooter who struggled. Sophomores Brady Shoulders (two points, seven rebounds, 1-for-10 from the field) and Jack Reddick (11 points, five rebounds, five assists, five steals) combined to go 0-for-11 from the arc, and all five starters missed at least one free throw — on the way to 7-for-14 from the line as a team.

Tack on being outrebounded 39-33, despite 16 offensive rebounds and 11 second-chance points, and a five-point defeat stings just a smidge — especially after coming away with 11 steals and only committing five turnovers.

“We’re challenging them and pushing them hard,” noted Lyon County coach Ryan Perry. “But 6-for-29, we’re not going to win a lot of basketball games shooting that percentage from the 3-point line, and 7-for-14 from the free throw line and 50%. Those seven points right there go a long way. Tough shooting night for us, and a lot of that can be attributed to a good Goodpasture defense. They’re a good defensive team. They weren’t out of position a lot tonight. Didn’t gamble much.”

Lyon County’s defense limited the Cougars (4-1) to 2-for-9 shooting from the arc, and they had their own free-throw struggles, too (just 8-for-16).

But Class of 2023 guard and one of Tennessee’s top player overall, Isaiah West, was “held” to 17 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and two blocked shots on 7-for-11 from the field. His back-to-back slashing buckets early in the fourth quarter had the Cougars up 52-47, before a 3-pointer from Perry and a layup from J. Shoulders tied the game.

West has considerable interest from a myriad of Division I programs across the country — Hofstra, Kennesaw State, Middle Tennessee, Ole Miss, Murray State, Nebraska, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Xavier, for now — and he played all but one minute of the contest.

“We were definitely outmatched by them with the athleticism concept of it,” J. Shoulders added. “We just came out here, and we knew we couldn’t let Isaiah West go off or hang 30 or 40 on us. So we tried to take him away just as much as we could.”

The Lyons twice took the briefest of leads in a contentious third quarter, as a Perry 3-pointer made it 28-27, and a J. Shoulders putback made it 30-29. But each time, Goodpasture answered. Xavier Shegog, Goodpasture’s 6-5 forward, rumbled for 16 points, nine rebounds and three assists on 8-for-9 shooting, and he had eight points in the first half to help the Cougars build a 27-25 lead by the break.

He caught an alley-oop for a 31-30 advantage, and Goodpasture wouldn’t trail again.

Tied at 52-all midway through the fourth quarter, Cougars forward Chandler Woosley would wriggle free for an offensive rebound putback to make it 54-52 — in what was another of those small plays that hurt big.

“I feel like rebounding got us,” J. Shoulders said. “They got a lot of defensive rebounds and a lot of offensive rebounds. It didn’t kill us that much, but it’s six points. Every little thing counts, and it ultimately came back and bit us.”

The Lyons went seven deep in this game, with Nick Whalin and Luke Gilbert the key reserves off the bench.
