Greenwood Fends Off Christian County Comeback Attempts

The Christian County Lady Colonels kept battling back in the final minutes of their game against Greenwood Friday night. But ultimately, they would run out of time and opportunities as the Lady Gators held on for a 76-72 win on the Lady Colonels home floor.

After a game that was nip and tuck for three quarters, the Lady Gators broke open a one-point game at the beginning of the 4th quarter with a 17-5 run to go up 69-56 midway through the quarter. And, it appeared that Greenwood was about to salt the win away.

But, Christian County would fight their way back over the final four minutes, not once, but twice. Keyed by the play of Destinee Catlett-Watkins, Christian County ripped off a quick 9-0 run to trim the lead to 69-65.

Greenwood responded with six quick points of their own to push the lead back out to double-digits at 75-65 with less than two minutes to ago.

One more time the Lady Colonels made a big push to get back in the game. Christian County would score seven straight points, the last three coming on a three-pointer from Catlett-Watkins with 5.2 seconds to go to cut the lead to 75-72. However, the threat would end there.

Sophomore Leia Trinh would make one of two free throws to secure the win for the Lady Gators.

The game had been back and forth for most of the night. Greenwood led 15-12 after one. The Lady Gators would extend the lead to 33-29 at the half.

Christian County cut into the lead after halftime, as the two teams headed into the final quarter with the Lady Gators clinging to a one-point lead.

Anaysia Bagwell topped the scoring list for Christian County with 21 points. Destinee Catlett-Watkins added 13. Mikayah Killebrew and NeVaeh Day also reached double figured with 12 points each.

Greenwood’s Leia Trinh led all scorers in the game with 24. Olivia Lovell scored 15 and Avery Overmohle finished with 13 for the Lady Gators.

Missed opportunities at the free-throw line were costly for the Lady Colonels. Christian County hit on 17-36 at the charity stripe.

Greenwood was able to pick up the win despite committing 30 turnovers. Christian County’s defense came up with sixteen steals in the game.

Greenwood did win the battle of the boards 57 to 44.
