Charitable Wildcats Hold Off Caldwell in Cadiz

Trigg County was in the giving spirit Tuesday but also played grinch in the end as the Wildcats held off Caldwell County 56-51 at Wildcat Gym.

Trigg committed nine of its 16 turnovers in the second half, and Caldwell took advantage – scoring 21 points.  However, Caldwell missed all four free throw attempts in the fourth quarter and missed 13 of its 16 shots behind the arc.

Jabrion Spikes scored all 16 of Caldwell County’s second quarter points as they overcame a nine-point deficit to take a 29-27 lead at halftime.

The game featured 12 ties and six lead changes with neither team leading by more than five points in the second half.

Kendric Adams and Jhaden Vaughn hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put Trigg ahead 53-51 with 1:12 left. Both teams exchanged turnovers with Caldwell calling a timeout with 24 seconds left. After a missed 3-pointer, Tyler Ahart hit one of two free throws to push the Trigg lead to 54-51.

In one final act of generosity, Trigg fouled Spikes on a 3-pointer with 2.8 seconds left.  Spikes missed the first two free throws and a third attempt missed the rim in an attempt to get off a final shot.

Adams hit two free throws for the final margin.

Trigg County hit 21 of 33 shots for 64-percent and knocked down 10 of 12 free throws.  Caldwell shot 43-percent from the field and was 6 of 13 at the charity stripe.

Jhaden Vaughn led Trigg with 20 points and eight rebounds. Adams and Khyran Vaughn both scored 11 points.

Spikes led all scorers with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Xavier Bumphus added nine points but left the game with apparent cramping with 6:08 left. The Tigers were outscored 13-8 down the stretch with Bumphus out of the game.

Tuesday’s game was the 140th of the series that dates back to 1953. Caldwell still leads the series 74-66.

Both teams have district games Friday. Caldwell visits Dawson Springs while Trigg County hosts Dawson Springs.
