Taylor Guess scored 23 of her game-high 34 points in the second half as Crittenden County remained unbeaten on the season, turning back Caldwell County 54-49 in girls’ basketball action Tuesday night in Marion.
Guess had 10 points during a 20-4 third-period run that turned a 19-14 halftime lead into a 21-point advantage. A three-point play by Guess gave the Lady Rockets their biggest lead of the night at 39-18 with 35 seconds left in the third quarter.
Caldwell (0-4) tried to get back in it with its best stretch of the night. The Lady Tigers outscored Crittenden 14-4 over the next 4 minutes. That trimmed the margin to 43-32 with 4:23 to play.
But Guess scored the next seven points — two free throw, another three-point trip, then two more free throws — to extend the margin to 50-32 with just over 3 minutes remaining.
Elliot Evans added eight points for Crittenden, which is off to a 4-0 start this season.
Caldwell got 13 points and six rebounds from Parris Gray. Katy Smiley grabbed 10 rebounds to go with five points.
The Lady Tigers still lead the all-time series 77-25, but the Lady Rockets have won the last two meetings.
Caldwell will host Christian County on Thursday while Crittenden entertains 5th District foe Lyon County on Friday.
