Blazers End Skid with 53-50 Win Over Daviess County

The University Heights Academy Blazers picked up their first win in the Henderson Chevrolet, Buick, GMC Classic Wednesday. The Blazers, after trailing by two at the half, came from behind to pick up a 53-50 win over the Daviess County Panthers, ending a three-game losing streak.

The 53 point total marked the third game in a row that the Blazers have scored that many points. UHA lost to Bowling Green 65-53 and lost to Union County 58-53.

The game started off looking like it would be a Panther kind of game. Daviess County’s defense limited UHA to nine first-quarter points as the Panthers took a 14-9 lead. Cole Burch scored six in the opening quarter for Daviess County.

The UHA defense showed that it could play tight right along with the Panthers. The Blazers limited Daviess County to ten points in the second quarter as they battled back to cut the lead to 24-22 going into the break. Preston Thomas and Lemar Northington each scored four points in the quarter for the Blazers.

The third quarter was Gavin Grubbs’ time. Grubbs lit up the Daviess County defense for nine points in the third as UHA took a 37-36 lead.

Coming down the stretch, fueled by the play of Grubbs and Northington, the Blazers were able to hold off Daviess County and pick up the three-point win.

Gavin Grubbs finished the game with 16 points for the Blazers. Lemar Northington also reached double-figures with ten points for UHA.

Daviess County was led by Cole Burch with 15 points. Gage Phelps added 14 for the Panthers.

Daviess County had their struggles from behind the arc, missing all nine of their 3-point attempts.

With the win, the Blazers move to 3-6 on the season. UHA returns to Henderson Thursday to take on the host Colonels at 6pm.

Daviess County drops to 4-6 for the season.
