Caldwell Wrestlers Have Strong Showing at Woodford County Invitational

Caldwell County’s wrestlers had a stellar two days at the Woodford County Invitational on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Tiger matmen went 5-0 on Tuesday in the Woodford County Dual Tournament, claiming the championship in that event.

Caldwell defeated Fort Thomas Highlands 54-15, then edged Madison Central 38-37.
The Tigers routed Danville 60-6, beat Woodford County 45-30 and topped South Oldham 52-18.

The 20 teams competed in bracket action Wednesday in Versailles, with Caldwell placing third in the team standings in that format.

Johnson Central was first with 285.5 points while host Woodford was runner-up with 191.5 points.

Caldwell totaled 165 points for its third-place finish.

Madison Central took fourth with 150.5 points.

Caldwell had two individual champions and two runners-up in Wednesday’s action.

Riley Johnson took the 132-pound title, decisioning Adam Williams of Johnson Central 8-0 in the first-place match. Johnson won his first two matches by pin before earning the decision in the championship match.

Cole Sherill was first at 285. He decisioned Luke Hill of Woodford County 8-4 in the championship match. Sherill won three matches, all by pin, to reach the first-place match.

Meanwhile, Logan Brown was runner-up at 106 pounds and Cofy Walls finished second at 126.

In addition, Colin Walls placed third at 175 and Dylan Walls was fourth at 165.

Collin Teutsch finished fifth at 120 pounds.

In other wrestling action this week, Caldwell’s Cale Goodwin took first place in the 134-pound weight class in the Junior Varsity Region 1 competition at Fort Campbell on Tuesday.

Goodwin advances to the Junior Varsity State Tournament in Louisville on Feb. 5.
