John Calipari had a variety of roster updates during his weekly radio show Wednesday night but still did not make it clear who would or would not play Saturday when Kentucky hosts Georgia. Let’s start with point guard Sahvir Wheeler, who collapsed on the floor less than four minutes into Tuesday’s loss at LSU when he ran into a screen set by a LSU player. He eventually was helped off the floor but never returned.

“It was a legal screen,” LSU Coach Will Wade said after the game. “It was a totally legal screen. It was just an unfortunate play.”

Wheeler’s exact injury was not revealed Tuesday night but Calipari said on the radio show that he was dealing with a neck injury and is listed “day to day” but Calipari indicated he was preparing to play without Wheeler, who is second in the SEC in assists.

If Wheeler is out, Davion Mintz probably would move to point guard even though Calipari said after the LSU game that Mintz was not a point guard.

“The good news is he’s been running the second unit (in practices) as a point guard for a month now,” Calipari said.

Freshman TyTy Washington is a combo guard who missed most of the final nine minutes at LSU with leg cramps. Calipari hopes he will play against Georgia but was not definite.

Calipari also gave a positive update on Shaedon Sharpe, the former No. 1 player in the 2022 recruiting class who reclassified and just enrolled at UK.

“He’s not ready to be playing in games yet. He just got on campus a few days ago,” Calipari said.

He did say that Sharpe went through individual workouts Wednesday but is not quite ready to practice with the team.

However, Sharpe adds to UK’s depth and provides another perimeter player that the Cats found out at LSU could certainly come in handy

  1. Let’s see. How many shooters can UK NOT depend upon this season? CJ Frederick, Dontaie Allen, ……

  2. The screen was legal. The impact of the screen was not the issue. It looked like his head hit the floor in trying to sell the action as a foul. Let him take his time about coming back, Mintz can run the point.
