Caldwell County senior Jabrion Spikes set a school record with 51 points — and grabbed 20 rebounds for good measure — as his Tigers rolled to an 81-51 victory in 7th District action at Dawson Springs on Monday.

It’s the fourth time in three weeks that Spikes has scored 42 points or more, but it’s the first time a Caldwell player has ever eclipsed 50 points in a single game.

Matt Fraliex, who is now the head coach of the Todd County Central girls’ basketball team, had held the Caldwell school record for almost 15 years. Fraliex put up 49 points in a Tiger win at Webster County on Feb. 20, 2007.

It’s the second big offensive night for a Tiger in the team’s last two trips to Panther Gym. Tripp Branch hit for 47 at Dawson Springs Feb. 25 last season.

Spikes, who is now averaging 31.5 points a game for the 9-3 Tigers, had 33 by halftime Monday night.

His 3-pointer with 3:21 left in the contest finished his 51-point total. That basket came none too soon. Caldwell head coach Daniel Kukahiko said Spikes was coming out at the next dead ball with Caldwell up comfortably in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers never trailed in the contest, which was a makeup date from Dec. 10.

Caldwell scored the first six points of the night as part of a 16-3 run to open the game.

Caldwell led 18-8 after one period and 42-22 at halftime.

The margin was 59-34 through three quarters.

The big drama of the final frame was how many points Spikes would end up with. But his 3-pointer from the right wing topped the record, pushing his total to 51.

Dawson Springs (1-8 overall, 0-4 district) got 21 points form Dilyn Skinner and 17 from Rex Blue.

The game was the district opener for Caldwell.

The Tigers have now taken 11 straight against Dawson and 25 of the last 26 meetings. Caldwell leads the all-time series 96-43.

Both teams enter 2nd Region All A Classic play on Tuesday.

Caldwell will play at Livingston Central while Dawson Springs goes to University Heights Academy in quarterfinal round action.
