Wildcats Win Sophomore Battle With the Rebels

The 70th meeting between Trigg County and Todd County Central was one of the better ones since the series began in 1955.

Jhaden Vaughn hit one of two free throws with 1.4 seconds left to send the game to overtime, then scored four points in the extra period to help the Wildcats beat the Rebels 46-44 Tuesday in Cadiz.

For Vaughn, it capped a 21-point, 15-rebound night for the Trigg sophomore who didn’t score in the first quarter.

Todd County Central broke a 2-2 tie early and didn’t relinquish the lead until the final two minutes of regulation.  Vaughn capped an 8-1 Trigg run that got the Wildcats to within 30-29 with five minutes left.

Preston Moore later countered with a 3-pointer to push the Rebel lead to 35-31. After a Kendric Adams bucket, Tyler Ahart buried a 3-pointer with 2:08 left to give Trigg its first lead since the first minute of the game.

Both teams traded buckets, and Perez Whitlock hit a jumper with 35 seconds left to put the Rebels up 39-38 with 35 seconds left.

After a missed shot by Trigg and a timeout with 9.1 seconds left, Todd County couldn’t inbounds the ball and turned it over. Vaughn was fouled with 1.4 seconds left and hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 39 and send the game to overtime.

In the extra period, Trigg made one field goal and was 4 of 9 at the free throw line, while Todd was 2 of 4 from the field but 0 of 2 at the free throw line.  Moore hit a half-court shot before the buzzer for the final two-point margin.

While Trigg County was led by a sophomore, so was Todd County Central as Jamison Glass scored 13 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. He was joined in double figures by Moore’s 13 points.

Todd County Central drops to 14-3 with two of the Rebels’ losses coming to 2nd Region schools. The other was to Hopkins County Central.

Trigg County is 9-8 with its win over the Rebels the first for the Wildcats in six years. Todd Central still leads the all-time series 43-27.
