The Todd County Central girls’ basketball team appeared to be headed for a second consecutive blowout loss to a 13th-District opponent on Monday night, but the Lady Rebels put a late scare into visiting Franklin-Simpson before falling 63-50.

The loss is the third in a row to leave the Lady Rebels at 6-9 overall, 0-2 in district play.  Franklin-Simpson improves to 11-3 and has the inside track to the district’s top seed.

Alexis Taylor accounted for six of the Lady Rebels’ eight 1st-quarter points, but Alera Barbee scored seven, and the Lady Wildcats led by 12 to start the 2nd quarter.

Todd Central only managed seven points in the 2nd but was still within 13 after Lucy Chester hit one of two free throws with seconds left.  However, Katelyn McAlister’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer gave Franklin a 31-15 halftime lead.

It appeared the Lady Rebels were in danger of being routed as Barbee scored eight 3rd-quarter points and Hadley Turner added four to build the Lady Wildcat advantage to 48-28.

But Todd Central wasn’t done yet.  Abby Williams scored eight points in the 4th and the Lady Rebels were within 13 after her bucket on a putback.  Ciara Collins banked in a 3 from the wing and Chester hit a pair of free throws to trim the margin to 59-50 with 1:54 to play.

Unfortunately for the Lady Rebels, those would be their last points and a steal and layup for Turner sealed the game for the Lady Wildcats.
