Hoptown Girls Roll UHA to Clinch District’s Top Seed

The Hopkinsville girls’ basketball team moved to 3-0 in 8th-District play and claimed the top seed in next month’s tournament with an 81-45 victory over University Heights on Friday in Tiger Gym.

The Lady Tigers win their fifth straight and seventh in eight tries to improve to 7-9 overall.  UHA drops their fifth in a row to slip to 3-13 with a trip to Trigg County coming up on Saturday.

LaTaijha Cherry scored six points for Hoptown and they led 14-4 after the 1st quarter.

The Lady Tigers led by as many as 19 at 31-12 after a layup by TaRia Sharber off an assist from Donnisha Flowers.  Brianna Daniel scored all five of her points in the 2nd quarter and she capped a 7-2 run with a steal and layup to pull the Lady Blazers to within 14 at the break.

A 16-2 spurt to start the 2nd half built the margin to 28 and Hopkinsville led 57-26 after a Faith Dansbury 3-pointer to close the 3rd quarter.

Alecia Davis did her best to keep the Lady Blazers afloat with 15 4th-quarter points, including a banked-in 3-pointer at the final buzzer.

Hopkinsville spread things around with nine players getting in the scoring column, led by Kahtavia Fleming with 15, Shaterrea Bellamy and Cherry with 14 each, and Dansbury with 12.

Davis led the way for the Lady Blazers with 23, followed by Amariya Bass with 13.
