Lady Storm Pulls Away in 2nd Half at Caldwell 69-45

Hopkins County Central’s girls pulled away in the third quarter on the way to a 69-45 victory at Caldwell County on Friday.

After losing 78-46 Jan. 17 at Hopkins Central in a game that featured a running clock in the fourth quarter, Caldwell’s girls were more competitive with the Lady Storm in the rematch on Homecoming night in Princeton.

Hopkins Central (14-4 overall, 4-0 district) got three free throws from Briana Fritz with just 0:00.3 seconds left in the first period to go up 14-11 after 8 minutes.

Caldwell (8-12, 1-3) was within 25-21 at halftime.

The Lady Tigers were still as close as 31-26 in the third quarter.

But an 11-0 run by the Lady Storm opened things up, and Hopkins Central went on to build a 49-32 advantage through three quarters.

Caldwell could not cut into the lead in the final frame as the Lady Storm went on to win by 24 points.

Emile Jones led Hopkins Central with 21 points while Mercy Sutton added 15 points and 10 rebounds. Fritz totaled 12 points.

Parris Gray, who was crowned Homecoming queen earlier in the night, had 16 points to lead Caldwell, which had won four of its previous five games. Katy Smiley added 12 points and 10 boards for the Lady Tigers.

Hopkins Central’s win tied the all-time series between the two schools at 32-32.

Caldwell’s girls will visit Livingston Central on Monday before hosting district foe Dawson Springs on Tuesday.

Hopkins Central visits University Heights Academy in Hopkinsville on Tuesday.
