No, I am not saying that Delaware defensive lineman Noah Matthews is going to be the next Josh Allen, who swept the national defensive player of the year awards after the 2018 season. However, there are a lot of similarities in the recruiting stories that got both players to Kentucky.

Remember Allen was not highly recruited out of New Jersey, got a late call from UK, made a quick visit, was offered a scholarship, and took it almost immediately.

The 6-5, 250-pound Matthews, a three-star prospect, talked to UK last Tuesday, made a weekend visit, got offered a scholarship, and signed with the Wildcats over Weber State and  Illinois Wednesday during the second national signing period.

Matthews praised the way Kentucky handled things with him and the “endless amounts of love” the UK coaching staff showed him during his recruitment.

The Wildcats plan to use Matthews on the edge — just like coach Mark Stoops and his staff did with Allen.

“We’re also excited to add Noah to our 2022 defensive class,” Stoops said in a UK release. “He fits the mold of what we’re looking for in an edge defender.  He possesses terrific length, twitch and power – all necessary attributes to be a difference-maker when stopping the run and rushing the passer.

“I can’t wait to get him to Lexington to help develop his full potential.”

Matthews, who also played tight end, was the Delaware Class 2A Defensive Lineman of the Year. He had 70 tackles, including 43 solo stops, as a senior along with 10 quarterback sacks. He forced eight quarterback hurries and helped his team finish 12-1 — the loss came in the state title game.
