Colonel Swimmers Play Waiting Game for State Qualification

Mitchell Havens now must play the waiting game.  The Christian County junior finished third in the 100-yard backstroke at Sunday’s Region I Swim Meet at Hopkinsville High.

The top two finishers in each region qualify for the state meet and then the next 22 fastest times statewide also advance to the KHSAA Boys’ State Swimming Championships presented by UK HealthCare on February 18 at the University of Kentucky

Havens’ time in the backstroke was 1:07.63. Havens also finished 10th in the 50-yard free (28.12).

Shaw Howell was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:22.50) and 15th in the 50-yard free (28.91).

Valentin Gonzales was 11th in the 200-yard freestyle (2:48.30) and 19th in the 100-yard free (1:17.18).

Fernando Montes was 16th in the 50-yard free (31.13) and was 16th in the 100-yard free (1:09.89).

Peyton Epley was 22nd in the 50-yard free (38.78) and 22nd in the 100-yard free (1:23.20).

The 400-yard free relay team of Valentin Gonzales, Fernando Montes, Shaw Howell, and Mitchell Havens finished in third place in 4:32.76.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Valentin Gonzales, Peyton Epley, Shaw Howell, and Mitchell Havens finished in sixth place in 2:05.50.

Christian County’s point total of 106 points was good for sixth place.  Murray won its second straight region title with 381 points.

Sunday’s region meet at the Rick Cohn Aquatic Center was delayed two days due to the winter weather that left many roads in western Kentucky ice covered. Because of the delay, the preliminary round was scratched and Sunday’s event was a timed final.
