Lady Rebels Can’t Overcome Free Throw Gap in Tennessee Loss

2-8-coleman

Todd County Central found out the hard way what usually happens when a Kentucky basketball team ventures into Tennessee to play a school on its home floor.

Three Lady Rebels fouled out, and host Montgomery Central enjoyed a 25-free throw advantage to claim a 41-38 win Tuesday near Cunningham.

It was another slow start for the Lady Rebels, who was held scoreless in the first quarter of a Saturday win over Russellville. Down 7-2 after one quarter, Ciara Collins and Lucy Chester hit 3-pointers to help Todd Central keep pace. However, early foul trouble sent leading scorer Alexis Taylor to the bench for most of the first half.

Down 20-14 at halftime, Chester scored eight points in the third frame, and Taylor added four to put the Lady Rebels up 28-27 after three quarters.

Then the free throw carnage began.

The Lady Indians only had two field goals in the fourth quarter but hit 10 of 20 free throws in the final eight minutes.  They were 21 of 40 from the line for the game, while Todd County Central was 6 of 15.

Buoyed by an 11 of 15 night at the charity stripe, Sarah Rankhorn scored a game-high 21 points for Montgomery Central, who snapped an eight-game losing streak. Todd Central beat MCHS by 17 points in December.

Chester led the Lady Rebels with 16 points. Abby Williams added seven points.

Todd County Central will host Logan County Friday.
