Caldwell Places 3rd in Region, Qualifies 8 for Semi-State

Six individual runner-up finishes helped Caldwell County place third in the team standings at the Region 1 Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at the CAB gym in Princeton.

Union County won its 19th straight regional championship with 330.5 points. Paducah Tilghman was runner-up with 227 points while Caldwell was third with 180. Christian County took fourth with 143 points.

Caldwell’s six regional runners-up were Logan Brown at 106 pounds, Collin Teutsch at 120, Riley Johnson at 132, Timothy Nichols at 138, Dylan Walls at 165 and Colin Walls at 175.

The Tigers qualified eight wrestlers for next Saturday’s semi-state tournament at Union County with top four finishes at the regional.

Cofy Walls was third at 126 pounds and Cole Sherrill placed fourth at 285.

Andre Carter is an alternate at 113 after a fifth-place showing in that weight class.

At 106, Brown won his first two matches by pin before falling to Jayden Raney of Union County 13-5 in the championship.

Teutsch won by pin in his first match at 120, then won by technical fall, 15-0, in the semifinals. He was pinned by Hunter Jenkins of Union County in 3:51 in the final.

At 132, Johnson ran his season-opening winning streak to 44-0 before falling to Paducah Tilghman’s Jayden Frazier in the regional championship match. Frazier claimed an 11-2 decision.

Nichols reached the final at 138 before being pinned by Eli Peyton of Tilghman in 1:22. Nichols won his first match by pin, then posted a 7-4 decision over Andres Quintana in the semifinals.

At 165, Dylan Walls won his first match by pin in just 15 seconds, then claimed an 8-4 win over Jack James of Tilghman in the semifinals. Walls suffered a hamstring injury in the championship match against Gavin Ricketts of Union County, resulting in an injury default.

Colin Walls won his first match at 175 in 14 seconds, then won his semifinal match by pin. He dropped a close 3-1 decision to Paxton Ervin of Union County in the championship.

Cofy Walls went 3-1 for his third-place finish at 126. After falling in the semifinals, Walls won his next match by pin in the consolation bracket to reach the third-place match. He won by technical fall in that match, 15-0, over Owensboro’s Reese McLaughlin.

Sherrill went 2-2 to place fourth at 285. He claimed a 6-5 decision in his opening match but fell in the semifinal round to Davis Pike of Union County 3-2 in a tiebreaker. Sherrill won 11-7 in the consolation round to get to the third-place match, but was pinned by Apollo’s Blaize Cart in 4:28.

At 113, Carter was 3-2. He won his fifth-place match by pinning Andrew Galbraith of Henderson County in 2:04.

Also wrestling for Caldwell were Cale Goodwin, who went 1-2 at 144; and Preston Rogers, who was 1-2 at 215.
