Monday’s girls’ state wrestling title match in the 138-pound class featured a rematch from last year. Unfortunately, it did not have the same result for Trigg County’s MaKenna Hendricks.

The Trigg County 8th grader lost in the championship match to Simon Kenton sophomore Gabriella Ocasio Monday at the Fourth Annual Girls’ State Wrestling Tournament.

Hendricks defeated Ocasio to win last year’s 126-pound class at the state tournament.

In her first match of the day, Hendricks scored a 12-0 major decision over Spencer County’s Paeten Gustinis.  She followed the win pins of Bardstown’s Emma Mattingly and Harrison County senior Kylie Hudgins to reach the championship match.

Hendricks, who also competes on the boys’ team at Trigg County, became the school’s first state wrestling champion last year since her coach Ralph Stevens won the 155-pound class in 1982.

210 wrestlers participated in Monday’s state tournament, double the entries from three years ago.

Girls’ wrestling is not sanctioned by the KHSAA.  The girls’ state tournament is sponsored by the Kentucky Wrestling Coaches Association which has made overtures to get the KHSAA to sanction the girls’ sport.  Kentucky is one of 24 states that does not sanction girls’ wrestling.
