The Lyon County Lady Lyons will end the month of February the same way they began it, but they are hoping for a much different result this time around. The Lady Lyons hosted the Madisonville-North Hopkins Lady Maroons on February 1 with Madisonville cruising to a 64-34 win. This time the stakes are much higher Monday night with a berth in the 2nd Region semifinals on the line.

Since 2007, the Lady Maroons have dominated the series between the two teams winning 11 of the 13 games played over that time span. However, the Lady Lyons have won two of the last four meetings in the series, including a 71-49 win last February.

Lyon County, at 16-14, is led by Rose Smith at 14.1 points per game. Super senior Calista Collins is also in double figures at 12.3 points a game.

Collins leads the team on the boards averaging 11 rebounds a game. Smith is a bit further back at 5.6 per game.

Shooting woes have been an issue throughout the season. Lyon County is shooting just 35.9 percent from the field, including 23 percent from behind the 3-point line. The Lady Lyons have connected on 56.8 percent of their free throws on the season.

The Lady Maroons, who stand at 24-5 and have won 11 straight, are led by senior Camryn LaGrange. The region “Player of the Year” comes into Monday night’s regional quarterfinal averaging 15.8 points a game. Emily Hallum, Destiny Whitsell, and Amari Lovan, all average in double figures at 11.4, 11.1, and 10.4 points a game respectively.

LaGrange is also the team’s top rebounder at 8.1 boards a game. Whitsell averages 5.9, while Lovan is right behind her at 5.8 rebounds a contest.

The Lady Maroons are almost better off to shoot from behind the arc. Madisonville connects on just 38.5 percent of its shots overall but is a solid 33.3 from behind the arc. Madisonville is not a team you want to have to foul, as the Lady Maroons are making 66.5 percent of the free throws on the season.

Tipoff is set for 6:30pm Monday night in Madisonville.
