The University Heights Academy Blazers had their “moments” on the field during the 2021 season. Among those “moments” was an upset of Lyon County in the opening round of the All A Classic, the same Lyon County team that would reach the final four of the state basketball tournament at the end of the season.

The Blazers also had some of “those moments” during the 2021 season. Developing consistency looms as a big factor UHA as the 2022 season gets underway.

University Heights will have some significant holes to replace as the season gets rolling, especially on the mound. Gone are Luke Welch and Seth Hancock from the rotation. Welch was a stalwart on the mound for the Blazers last season, including shutting down Lyon County in the Blazers’ All A upset win. UHA will also miss Seth Hancock who provided some valuable innings on the hill.

Look for Ian Tyler, Eston Glover, Ty Hunt, and Ben Stone to get their looks on the mound for the Blazers. 8th graders Jackson Flynn and Jaiden Miles also made appearances for the Blazers in 2021.

At the plate, the Blazers did have some big games last season. UHA scored at least seven runs on 12 different occasions, so the potential is there for the Blazers to cause problems for opposing pitching staffs. Being more consistent at the plate will go a long way towards a successful season for University Heights.

The Blazers return Ty Hunt, Eston Glover, and Ben Stone as the core of the offensive attack. Nic Luckey and John Dearmond also had their moments swinging the bat last season. And, be sure to keep an eye on youngsters Eli Finch and Jackson Flynn.

The Blazers, who finished last season at 12-21, have a home schedule that includes contests with Caldwell County, Owensboro, Union County, Russellville, Henderson County, Lyon County, Heritage Christian, and their run through the 8th District.

On the road, the Blazers will face Hopkins Central, Henderson County, Butler County, McLean County, and Hickman County, among others.

The Blazers open the season Monday afternoon as they host Caldwell County.
