Exploding for seven runs in the third inning, including four with two outs, the Heritage Christian Academy baseball squad overpowered Kenwood in a 16-10 slugfest Tuesday evening.

With the game tied 4-4 after just two innings, the Warriors surged ahead for good after Tra Fowler delivered a two-run single to left and Carter Glover followed with an RBI double, two pitches later.

JJ Thompson, who was one of two HCA sluggers to have three hits in the offensive onslaught, made it 8-4 on a two-out RBI single. David Jent and Grant Floyd got in on the act with an RBI single and two-run double, respectively, to put the Knights in an 11-4 hole.

Heritage tacked on four more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, sparked by Floyd’s RBI single, and then sustained a final Kenwood rally in the sixth to earn the victory. The teams combined for 20 hits and 10 errors, filling the scorebook with plenty of crooked numbers.

Weston Powell also had a big night for the Warriors, finishing 3-for-3 with a co-game-high three runs scored. He also walked once and drove in a pair of runs. Atop the order, Thompson was 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and a game-high four stolen bases. HCA swiped 13 bases as a squad. The KHSAA record for most steals in a game is 21.

The top seven batters in the Heritage Christian lineup combined for 11 hits, 13 runs and 9 RBIs. Trenton Hayes (2-1) scuffled at times on the mound, but managed to strike out seven and earn the win after allowing six hits and seven runs (three earned) in 3 2/3 innings. Thompson struck out four, walked three and allowed three runs (none earned) in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Daniel Thompson doubled twice and drove in six runs to lead the Knights in defeat. Brandyn McCullum was touched up for 10 hits, 12 runs and seven walks in four innings of work, earning the loss on the bump for KHS.

HCA is scheduled to play again April 21 at Christian Fellowship School in Draffenville.
