Todd County Central sent its two softball seniors out in style with a 5-4 come-from-behind victory Friday in Elkton. And they both had a big hand in the win.
Sam Case was her usual self. Entering the game with a .423 batting average, Case was 3-for-3 with an RBI single.
However, Nadia Grullon got the first start of her varsity career on senior night. She responded with an RBI double and a run-scoring groundout in three at-bats.
Things looked rough for Todd Central early as Hopkins County Central plated four runs in the opening inning. Brinkley Armstrong had a two-run single and Lilian Higgins followed with a two-run double to left field to stake the Lady Storm to a quick 4-0 lead.
Abby McPherson settled down after the shaky start. She only allowed three hits and no runs over the final six innings. McPherson retired seven of the last eight batters she faced.
Todd Central scored single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings to get to within one run.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Lucy Cumbee was hit by a pitch to open the frame. Grullon bunted Cumbee to second. Madelyn Slaughter laid down a bunt that scored Cumbee. Karli Herrera followed with an RBI double to give the Lady Rebels their first lead of the game.
Hopkins Central got the tying run on base in the seventh, but appropriately, Case caught a line drive at third off the bat of Amelia Johnson to end the game.
The final out to Case was appropriate because the All-District and All-Region player is undergoing labrum surgery next week, thus ending her season and high school career.
Alyssa Blanchard and Keira Bryan each had a pair of hits for Hopkins Central, who was playing just its third game this month. The Lady Storm dropped to 1-8.
Todd County Central (11-8) will play at district rival Russellville Tuesday.
