Drew Davis was sensational and won for the sixth time in seven starts this season, leading the Graves County High School baseball team to a 5-0 victory over visiting Caldwell County. It was the sixth win in a row for the Eagles, who used seven singles and took advantage of a trio of Tiger errors in Mayfield.

Davis (6-1) struck out eight in the five-hit shutout, throwing 70 strikes on 90 pitches during his seven innings of work. He also walked none and allowed just one extra base hit — a two-out double by Hunter Newsom in Caldwell’s final at-bat.

Graves County went ahead for good when Jamison Curd singled home Drew Hayden in the second inning. The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the fourth after a Tiger miscue and two-out RBI single from Hayden Thompson. It was Hayden (2-for-2, run, RBI, walk) getting into the act again in the fifth, providing insurance with an RBI single, followed by Cole Katzman’s RBI groundout to make it 5-0.

The Tigers, who were seeking their fifth win in their last six games, delivered hits in each of the first two innings, but grounded into a double play and got caught stealing in each of those frames, coming up empty. Logan Smiley led Caldwell’s offense in defeat, finishing 2-for-3.

Deontaye Walls (1-4) took the loss for CCHS. He struck out five in five innings, but also gave up seven hits, two walks and five runs. Just one of the runs was earned by the Eagles. Cole Slone struck out one and pitched a perfect inning in relief for Caldwell County.

Graves County’s victory was the third in as many games against 2nd Region competition. The Eagles are now 5-2 against 2nd Region teams this year. Caldwell (10-7) will look to get back on track Thursday vs. Lyon County.
