Hopkinsville sophomore Lucas Kaetzel pitched six strong innings on Tuesday against visiting Union County, but the effort was wasted as the Tigers committed seven errors and struggled to put runs on the board in a 6-2 defeat.

Zach Moss got the Tigers on top in the bottom of the 1st with a solo shot over the left-field fence, and Kaetzel didn’t allow a hit over the first four innings to hold the lead.

Two Tiger errors and an RBI single by Riley Cullen gave Union County the advantage in a three-run 5th.  Union starter Cannon Sheffer surrendered only one run on two hits over 5.2 innings before giving way to Waylon Wheatley to close out the 6th.

The Tigers’ hopes of a comeback were dashed in the Union County half of the 7th.  The Braves took advantage of another Tiger miscue to push a run across, and Landon Jones’ two-run double made the score 6-1.

In their final at-bat, a bit of a two-out rally got a run back for the Tigers.  Charlie Rutland walked to start the inning, and after Joseph Boor singled, Preston Chaudoin brought in Rutland with a base hit.

Kaetzel allowed three unearned runs on two hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.  Mason Spain worked the 7th, yielding three runs on four hits with a strikeout.

Sheffer walked five and struck out seven for the Braves, and Wheatley allowed a run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Union County snapped a four-game skid to improve to 12-11 overall.

The Tigers dropped their third in a row to slip to 8-13 ahead of a big district matchup with UHA on Friday.  Both teams are 2-2 in district play with the 2nd seed in the district tournament on the line.
