5-3-thompson

J.J. Thompson had four hits and scored three runs from the leadoff spot to help Heritage Christian Academy pick up an 11-5 road win at Kenwood Tuesday.

Thompson’s table-setting ability was on display right out of the gate as he singled, stole second, and stole third in the first inning. After Trenton Hayes walked and stole one of HCA’s 10 bases in the game.

Weston Powell doubled them home as part of the four-run first inning. David Jent doubled home Powell on the next pitch for a 3-0 lead.

Carter Glover’s RBI single capped the opening inning scoring for the Warriors.

After Kenwood got back a run in the home half of the first, HCA added two more runs with Thompson serving as the catalyst. He doubled and moved to third on a Hayes single.

After a Kenwood balk scored Thompson, Jent plated Hayes with an RBI single to center.

Kenwood bounced back in the second, scoring two runs on five singles.

The score remained 6-3 until the fifth when Thompson’s hard single to right scored Bradley Boyd. Hayes followed with a triple, and Powell’s RBI single upped the HCA lead to 9-3.

HCA’s final run came on a Thompson triple that scored Boyd.

Thompson’s final stat line showed him 4-for-5 with three runs, three stolen bases, and two RBIs. The top of the Warrior lineup was huge – the first four batters going 10-for-17 with eight RBI. The sophomore has stolen 34 bases in 20 games this season and is batting .661.

Powell’s three RBI give him the team lead with 17.

Boyd did a good job at the bottom of the Warrior lineup with a hit, two walks, and two runs scored.

Grant Floyd (2-0) allowed three earned runs in three innings to get the win. Walker Ashby struck out nine of the 19 batters he faced in relief to get the rare four-inning save.

Furio Burac had two hits and two RBI for Kenwood (5-13).

HCA (14-6) will travel to Todd County Central Friday.
