Marshall County broke open a 2-2 ballgame with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on to beat Caldwell County 8-4 in baseball action Monday in Draffenville.

Marshall senior Evan Oakley improved to 6-2 on the season with a complete-game six-hitter. He struck out 10 while two of the four runs he allowed were unearned.

Caldwell (11-8) tied the game at 2-2 with an unearned tally in the top of the sixth.

Marshall (17-13) sent 11 men to the plate in the bottom of the inning. A pair of Caldwell errors also aided the Marshals in the big inning as the home team went up 8-2.

The Tigers tried to rally in the top of the seventh. Logan Smiley doubled home a run, then scored on a groundout by Brady Holeman. But Caldwell could only get as close as 8-4.

Smiley and Jamus Carneyhan were each 2-for-4 and scored a run for the Tigers. Carter Whittington was 1-for-3 and scored twice.

Gavin Clark was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in for Marshall.

The Tigers will return to action on Thursday when they host Crittenden County at the VFW Ballpark in Princeton.

Caldwell finishes the regular season on Friday with a home date against Fort Campbell.
