Shane Burns 4-0 After Racers’ Win at Evansville

Former Caldwell County standout Shane Burns is 4-0 at Murray State after outdueling Evansville 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Burns impressed for the Racers on the mound, going 7-plus innings while allowing just three hits and two runs in the performance. The junior left-hander worked efficiently throwing just 86 pitches while grabbing four strikeouts and walking just one.

Evansville scored both of its runs in the bottom of the third while Murray State answered with its three runs in the the top of the fourth.

Alec Whaley tossed the last two innings the earn the save. The MSU all-time appearances leader left two Evansville runners on first and second base after a strikeout, a pop-up to second base, and a ground ball to shortstop ended the inning. Whaley then tossed a perfect ninth with three flyouts to secure the win.

The Racers are now 29-22. With one more win, Murray State can secure the first back-to-back 30-win seasons since 1975-76

Murray State now sets its sights on Tennessee Tech for the final series of the regular season. The Racers and Golden Eagles are set for a three-game series beginning on Thursday.

Burns is Caldwell’s all-time winningest pitcher. He posted a 31-8 mark on the mound for the Tigers and helped Caldwell capture 2nd Region championships in 2016 and 2017.
