The Academy for Individual Excellence broke open a tie game with a nine-run fourth inning and then held off a late rally from the Heritage Christian Academy Lady Warriors to claim an 18-14 win in the KCAA state championship softball game Saturday afternoon at HCA. AIE had to turn back a seventh-inning rally that saw Heritage bring the tying run to the plate before grounding into a force out to end the game.

The Lady Warriors fell just short in their bid to win their first KCAA state title since 2015. Their last appearance in the title game had been in 2018 when they lost to North Hardin Classical.

In addition to the 32 runs, the two teams combined for 45 hits in the game. The only half-inning where a team did not score at least one run was in the top of the second when HCA was blanked.

Heritage scored two in the first, two in the third, three in the fourth, four in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh. AIE scored one in the first, four in the second, two in the third, nine in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth.

Both teams also had their share of fielding struggles as the two combined for ten errors in the game.

Kailyn Johnson had a big day for the Lady Warriors, going 4-6 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Kennedy Hughes, who was named to the KCAA All-State team, was 4-5 with 3 RBIs. Madison Warren, who was named to the All-Tournament team, ended her season still being on a hitting tear, going 3-5 on the afternoon. Kailyn Stanley was also 3-5 and had a double and two RBIs.

Kennedy Hughes went the distance in the circle. She gave up 18 runs, but only ten of them were earned. She struck out four while walking three.
