Hoppers Rally at Madisonville to Improve to 4-1

The Hoptown Hoppers are 4-1 after rallying late to win at Madisonville Tuesday night.

Hoptown continued its hot start by scoring four times in the top of the eighth inning to erase an 8-6 deficit, and went on to claim a 12-8 decision over the Miners at Elmer Kelley Stadium at the Madisonville City Park.

Luis Vergara-Schoonewolf had a two-run home run as part of a six-run third inning that gave the Hoppers an early 6-1 lead.

But Madisonville (2-3) came back to tie the game in the bottom of the frame. The Miners added two more runs in the fourth to take their 8-6 advantage.

Three walks, a hit batter and an error helped Hoptown regain the lead in the eighth inning. The Hoppers scored their four runs in the inning on just one base hit.

Hoptown added two more runs in the ninth to make it 12-8.

Vergara-Schoonewolf, from Cartagena, Columbia, but who plays at the University of Indianapolis, finished 2-for-5 with three runs batted in for the Hoppers.

Fred Fernandez of Maracuib, Venezuela, who plays at Olney Central College, was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs driven in.

Alex Archuleta of the University of Southern Indiana went 2-for-4 and scored three times while Anthony Zarlingo of Southwest Tennessee Community College was 2-for-5 for Hoptown.

Kobe Jones of Shorter University in Georgia had a pair of solo home runs for Madisonville, going 2-for-3 with the two RBIs and three runs scored. Jake O’Connell from the University of Montevallo in Alabama was 2-for-5 with a double and three runs batted in for the Miners.

Garrett Blevins, the third Hoppers pitcher of the night, picked up the win on the mound. Blevins, from Wilmington College in Ohio, shut out Madisonville over the final three innings, striking out five without giving up a base hit.

The Hoppers will host the Louisville Jockeys for the first time on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Hopkinsville High School.
