Kentucky fans — or at least a lot of Kentucky fans — are not happy with the way the Shaedon Sharpe situation played out last season, especially with him now saying he has no regrets about spending the second semester at UK, not playing and then putting his name into the NBA draft.

However, based on point guard Sahvir Wheeler’s comments Friday, Sharpe’s teammates are fine with what he did or at least understand it better than many UK fans.

“I’m happy for him, happy for anyone who decides to pursue their dream by going to the next level. I wish him nothing but the best and success,” Wheeler said. “At the end of the day, he’s making the best decision for himself and his family. You can’t blame him or fault him for that.”

True but not every Kentucky fan sees it that way and probably never will. However, Wheeler said it was obvious during Sharpe’s three months with the team that he was a future NBA player.

“Shaedon can do everything. He’s a great teammate. If you come here, you’re a great teammate, and that’s what he is first,” Wheeler said. “He was the first one to celebrate with us when someone did something good, first one to pick us up when something went wrong.”

“It never felt like he wasn’t a part of the team. Even when he came in December or whenever it was, it felt like he was here the whole year. That’s how good of a teammate he was.”

He was also special on the court.

“He’s a freaky athlete, stupid athletic,” Wheeler said. “He can handle it, shoot the ball, come off pin-downs for catch-and-shoot, creates shots for himself.”

Then Wheeler couldn’t help himself.

“He’s unselfish — not as good of a passer as me, but he’s definitely unselfish and knows how to make the right play,” Wheeler laughed and said.

  1. I love Sahvir. His perspective is wonderful. That said, if you never write another article about Sharpe that will be just fine.

  2. Calipari and Sharpe’s abuse of the UK basketball program is the pig. There is no sugar coating that will change the fact of what they did together to this program.

    It is unforgivable.

    1. Professor, saying bad things about Calipari and Kentucky no matter how true will get you vilified by those in BBN who don’t want to hear the truth. The top comment heard by a Kentucky fan now sounds like… WELL, wait til next year!
