Hoppers Drop to .500 With Home Loss to Muhlenberg County

The top of the Muhlenberg County lineup wielded most of the damage Tuesday night as they beat the Hoptown Hoppers 12-9 at Tiger Field.

The first four batters were a combined 8-for-19 with seven runs scored and five RBI for the Stallions, who used a five-run fifth inning to take an 8-4 lead.

Hoptown tied the game at nine with four runs in the sixth inning. Joshua Rodriguez plated two runs with a double. A passed ball and wild pitch added two more runs for the Hoppers.

Muhlenberg County came right back with three runs in the seventh inning. The big blow was a two-run single by Kail Hill that gave the Stallions the lead for good. Hill was one of three Muhlenberg County players with two RBI. He also had two hits and scored three times.

The Stallions were busy on the base paths, stealing eight bases while getting caught three times.

Five Hoptown pitchers combined to throw 203 pitches with Chase Harlan tagged with the loss. Zach Duenas went the first 4.1 innings, striking out six and allowing six earned runs.

Drew Donaldson and Anthony Smith each had two hits for the Hoppers, who outhit Muhlenberg 14-13.

The Hoppers have dropped two straight games to the Stallions for the first time since 2018 but still lead the all-time series 19-9.

Hoptown drops to 8-8 overall and into fourth place in the OVL South standings, three games behind first-place Full Count. Muhlenberg County improves to 6-9. They are in fourth place in the OVL North standings.

The Hoppers hit the road for two straight games beginning with a Wednesday contest at Owensboro.

Anthony Smith (Franklin College) was 3-for-5 with an RBI.
