No Commitment Coming Soon From Lyon County Star Travis Perry

Travis Perry says, even with a UK offer, he's still in the early stages of his recruitment.

His parents both went to the University of Kentucky and he lives in Lyon County, a hotbed for UK sports. Yet Lyon County junior Travis Perry insists he’s more of a college basketball fan than a Kentucky fan.

However, the 6-2 guard admits the scholarship offer he got from UK coach John Calipari Saturday during an unofficial visit to Kentucky was special.

“It was definitely really cool that he thinks I can flourish at Kentucky under him,” Perry said Sunday on WLAP Sunday Morning Sports Talk. “He said he had only talked to five or six guys in the 2024 (recruiting) class.”

“I know I am in elite company in his eyes. It’s something that kind of humbles you and makes you want to continue to work harder for sure.”

He already had scholarship offers from Purdue, Mississippi, Cincinnati, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Wake Forest Bradley, New Orleans, Western Kentucky and Creighton.

Perry said Sunday he will not be in a hurry to make his recruiting decision. The last two in-state players Calipari offered — Dontaie Allen of Pendleton County and Reed Sheppard of North Laurel — both committed almost immediately.

Perry said he has no timetable for when he might make a college choice.

“I am still in the early steps (of recruiting). I am still going out and visiting places,” Perry said. “I like to get on campus and meet coaches face to face. It is a great thing to see them and how they run things.”

“I would just say I am still in the early stages. I do not see a commitment coming any time soon. When I find the best fit and relationship, that’s when it (a decision) will be made.”

He said he will be watching all the teams recruiting him play this season to see how he might fit into their systems.

“I am definitely going to be watching Kentucky and how I would fit into games and how I could impact games for sure,” Perry, who has scored 3,189 points with two years left to play, said. “The main thing is the relationship and trust going both ways between me and the staff. Do they believe I can come in and make an impact and do I believe they can help me be the best person and player I can be.”
