Kentucky freshman Joran Anthony won the under-20 200-meter dash title in 20.34 seconds at the USA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., Saturday to earn a spot at the U20 World Championships in Cali, Colombia, in August.

That’s an impressive feat but considering what happened, it’s even more impressive.

Anthony says his hip actually “popped out” while he was running and he was hurting almost the entire race but still ran a personal best and best in the U.S.

“I could probably have run faster if I had been pushed more and had a better lane,” said the Tylertown, Miss., speedster. “My hip did kind of pop out of place. I am not used to running track as much. I just readjusted and got back to going.”

Anthony has been in Lexington the last month but he’s also been working out with the football team where he’ll be a receiver for coach Mark Stoops next season. He had a brilliant high school track career but will do both sports at UK.

While making the USA team in the 200, what he did in the 100 might have been even  more impressive even though he finished sixth in 10.43 seconds. He slipped coming out of the blocks, almost fell down on his second step and still came back to run 10.43.

“I really believe I was ready to go sub 10 (second). I was ready for that. I had not competed in so long and was ready to go. It was a joyful moment and then I slipped,” Anthony said. “I really wanted to make the (world championship) team in the 100 and 200 but I am officially on the 4×100 (relay) team and competing in the 200.”

His high school track coach, Myron Sartin, said Anthony had made it “look so easy” in the 100 preliminaries that he was sure he was ready for a huge race.

“Then he had to put his hands down to touch the track to keep from falling face first on the track,” Sartin said. “It was kind of like taking a step, doing a pushup and then taking off again. The winner finished in 10.21. I am not saying Jordan would have won, but he fell and ran 10.4. I think he might have amazed people doing what he did in the 100 even more than what he did winning the 200.”

His second 100 meters in the 200-meter dash win was timed in 9.6 seconds. He posted on Twitter that he was “back like I never left.”
