Several times last season Kentucky coach John Calipari talked about the need to play Daimion Collins more — and then he never did.

Of course, Kentucky was rolling through mid-February and it was hard to fault Calipari’s decision not to give the freshman forward extensive minutes. However, when the Cats struggled the last few weeks, Collins still did not play a lot.

Teammates Bryce Hopkins (Providence) and Dontaie Allen (Western Kentucky) both transferred after the season over their lack of playing time. Many thought Collins might do the same, especially when assistant Jai Lucas — Collins’ main recruiter — left for Duke.

However, he said he never thought of putting his name into the transfer portal.

“I knew once I committed here at Kentucky, I was fully committed. So, I didn’t have any interest in transferring,” the sophomore said.

Collins’ parents obviously agreed.

“My parents kept me positive,” he said. “They would tell me to keep working. My time is going to come.”

Now with starter Keion Brooks gone via the transfer portal to Washington, playing time is available at forward where Collins will compete with Jacob Toppin but he cannot wait for the chance.

“This season I’ll be able to show my versatility. How I can play inside and out, block shots, rebound, run the floor and just show I can play to my full potential,” the sophomore said. “I’m a lot more comfortable. I’ve been working on my game a lot in the offseason, just getting ready for next season. So, I’m feeling ready and more comfortable.”
