Former University of Kentucky teammates and eastern Kentucky natives Maci Morris and Blair Green have always talked about doing a basketball camp together but never could.

It was not just COVID closing gyms, but Green was still in school after Morris graduated and could not be paid — until this year thanks to name, image and likeness changes.

That’s why the two have camps planned July 15 and 16 at Pineville High School. Players in grades 9-12 will have camp from 6-8:30 p.m. on July 15 and grades K-8 will attend from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on July 16.

Cost is $40 per person or $60 for two or more family members. Registration is at 5 p.m. on July 15 and 8 a.m. on July 16.

“Blair texted me not too long ago and we just thought this would be a good time to do it,” Morris said. “We worked out the schedules and this is what we came up with.”

Morris played at Bell County and Green at nearby Harlan County.

“The response since we announced the camp has been really good. So many people have already reached out,” Morris said. “We are just hoping we can influence kids around us in this area. We want to influence them to be better than the labels most people put on them. We want to give them hope and someone to look up to and know.”

My guess is a lot of players, especially in that area, know plenty about the two UK players. Morris finished her UK career in 2019 with 1,692 points — sixth on the all-time scoring list — and hit 252 3-pointers — second best at UK. Green has scored 510 points in her three seasons but she missed last year with a ruptured Achilles.

“We want to show the high school players how a college practice would be so the girls understand the intensity and what it takes to make it through college practice or workouts,” Morris said. “For the K-8, it will be more like an average summer camp focusing on fundamentals with some fun competitors. We wanted the high school camp to be more competitive so we could share our college experiences.”

Morris says Green is near 100 percent after last year’s injury and has been cleared to practice with the Cats. Morris admits she’s not been playing a lot of basketball recently.

“I will shoot at my house but that’s about it. I am definitely looking forward to the camp and being back out there on the court,” she said. “I love having a chance to help players get better and coach them. I love having a chance to influence younger players to get to the next level.”
